A Belleville councillor has called on public health to take some action on the incidents of young children using vaping products.
Councillor Bill Sandison raised the issue at the meeting of the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health on Wednesday.
Sandison said he has a real concern and indicated there needs to be a strong educational program.
Sandison called the numbers fairly staggering.
He said one third of teenagers in high school are vaping.
He pointed to the favourite flavours.
“Health Canada has taken it upon itself to look at restricting some of the flavors of on the e-cigarette product. It’s not enough.”
Sandison indicated Health Canada would “leave the mint and menthol but ban the others. I think our Board of Health and Health Canada and the Minister of Health should ban all flavours, with the exception of tobacco.”
Outgoing Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza says this is an example of the backlog of problems developing behind the scenes throughout the pandemic.
