The pandemic has forced many charitable organizations to pivot their fundraising plans and the Wheelchair of Hope Foundation is no different.
The Foundation is holding its first annual Charity Cycle Ride for Mobility on September 11 in Prince Edward County.
The Charity Ride is a family friendly event with three different distances to suit all skill levels and will start and end at Karlo Estates Winery in Prince Edward County where there will be a complimentary BBQ for all riders.
Foundation President and founder John Cairns says they have not held a fundraiser since their last gala in 2019.
“Funds raised also go towards bringing wheelchair devices, scooters, manual, power chairs. So monies raised go to ensure that we provide these mobility devices at no cost.”
Cairns says gaining mobility is life changing for people who might otherwise not be able to afford an expensive wheelchair.
“We provide that freedom, that gift of freedom through mobility. We have had families literally hold us and cry with such tears of joy for some who simply wanted to cross the street to go to Tim Hortons or a coffee shop.”
The Foundation has also embarked on some community projects like helping to install a Mobi Mat at North Beach Provincial Park and there are plans to purchase an accessible swing for a local playground.
