Ontario Liberal Party leader Steven Del Duca phoned in to CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday Del Duca said he sent a letter to the speaker of the legislature requesting that all Ontario MPPs be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Later the same day Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that any Progressive Conservative MPPs who have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will be removed from caucus.
CTV News reported that there are two conservative MPPs who are unvaccinated.
Del Duca said that it’s important for MPPs to lead by example through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This can’t be a do as I say, not as I do moment. We’re telling the people of Ontario to get the vaccine, so at the very least, unless we have a pre-existing medical condition, we should be getting the vaccine to demonstrate that leadership.”
He was also critical of the Ford government’s announcement Tuesday regarding vaccination policies.
The announcement included mandatory vaccination disclosure policy for health and education workers as well as others. Anyone who is not fully vaccinated must submit to regular COVID-19 testing.
Del Duca said he was looking for a vaccine mandate for those sectors. He was also critical of Ford for not being present at the announcement and instead sending out Ontario Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore.
“On something as critically important as this I think it was actually cowardly for Doug Ford to not be there in public to speak about this and to respond to reporters’ questions. In the interest of transparency I thought it was, again, cowardly that he sent out Dr. Moore on his own to try to justify decisions that we all know Doug Ford and his team made.”
