Despite protests from residents living nearby it doesn’t appear there will be any change to the situation at the Harold Quarry, north of the village of Stirling.
The quarry, used for decades as a local swimming hole and ice rink, was fenced off and gated several weeks ago because of liability concerns and insurance costs.
Residents have held a couple of protests at the quarry since.
However, Stirling-Rawdon Mayor Bob Mullin says opening the quarry up for recreational use would be very difficult to justify and would be beyond the community’s ability to pay.
“We’d have to control access and we have to have a lifeguard if we’re allowing swimming and that sort of thing but we’d have to verify that the water was suitable for swimming and I doubt that that would ever ever pass.”
The Harold Quarry is open for water-taking two days a week for a total of four hours until at least the end of this month.
