Hastings County has lost a bid for federal programs dealing with family violence.
In January, the Community and Human Services Committee had supported a project to work with other agencies and apply for projects that deliver health promotion programs, tailored to the needs of those at risk of this violence.
That application was not approved.
At its meeting on Wednesday, the committee indicated support for staff to continue the research and make applications for funding opportunities to support the needs of the county’s housing tenants.
The staff report outlined the following:
The primary audience for this program and intervention identified women and children living in social housing in Hastings County; specifically, in the Cities of Belleville and Quinte West, the Town of Deseronto and in North Hastings (Bancroft). The secondary audience targeted individuals and families wanting to access health supports and supportive programming in the rural areas (specifically North Hastings through the purchase of a rural mobile unit). Programming was identified with various community partners that would have been provided on-site or virtually.
Supporting partners included:
- Enrichment Centre for Mental Health: Strong Women Rising, Anxiety and Depression Support Groups, Powerful Emotions in the Workplace;
- Three Oaks Foundation: Why Women Stay
- Maggies Resource Centre: Why Women Stay
- Bancroft Community Family Health Team: Women’s and child wellness visits including sexual health, general outreach in partnership with the Rural Outreach Community Kindness program through North Hastings Community Trust, Nutrition support, cooking classes, well baby support, fitness and meditation
The need for intervention, education and support for individuals and families living in social housing continues along with the need for research on best practices and interventions. Staff are requesting support from Committee and Council to continue to research and make application to funding opportunities that support the needs of tenants, with the support and collaboration of partner organizations.
