Hastings County council will be asked to seek federal funding to buy a modular emergency shelter unit for the town of Bancroft.
The Community and Human Services Committee decided at its meeting on Wednesday to put forward the request to county council to apply for $500,000 under the Reaching Home program of the federal government.
The program is to help rural and remote communities deal with homelessness during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The unit would accommodate up to 10 individuals in separate units and include a gathering spot for meals and programs.
A staff report indicated the following:
The complex issues this vulnerable population presents requires a collaborative supportive approach to address the unique needs. Community partnerships have been leveraged to ensure appropriate supports and services are available connected to this temporary housing solution.
If successful in securing capital funding, a subsequent report to Committee will outlined the design, operational costs and funding sources and programming. Implementation of this initiative will support much needed services in the Bancroft community and assist with improved data collection to support advocacy to senior levels of government regarding investments needed to support long term solutions through the development of appropriate and affordable housing solutions with supports.
Director Suzanne Ritchie Raymond indicated to the committee a further report will be made in September.
