Rumours are starting to swirl that Hastings Lennox & Addington MP Derek Sloan could be starting his own political party.
On Sunday, Sloan spoke at a rally in Calgary. “This is actually the first time in a public setting I’m talking about this. I cannot tell you much, I cannot even tell you the name unfortunately, until it’s approved. We may be 2-3-4 weeks from approval. We’re organizing now and we’re going to light a match folks. It’s going to be the greatest patriotic movement Canada’s ever seen.”
To create a political party, you must receive approval from Elections Canada.
After getting elected to office in October 2019, Sloan then turned his sights on the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. When Andrew Scheer stepped down, Sloan ran against Peter Mackay, Leslyn, and eventual winner Erin O’Toole. A few months later Sloan was kicked out of the Conservative caucus.
Sloan sits as an Independent Member of Parliament in the House of Commons, however, since the spring sitting of the house completed weeks ago, Sloan has been visiting ridings across the country. He intends to run for reelection in Hastings-Lennox and Addington. Former Liberal MP Mike Bossio and Conservative candidate Shelby Kramp-Neuman have also announced their intention to run.
There are some who speculate that he is in discussions with Maxime Bernier about working with the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, however nothing official has come from either side.
We have contacted Sloan for comment.
