Prince Edward County Council is endorsing the use of hot mix asphalt for the rehabilitation of County Road 49.
Committee of the Whole made the decision at its Thursday meeting, opting to go with Jewell Engineering’s recommendation to use asphalt rather than concrete to repave the 17.3 kilometre stretch of road.
It’s estimated that repairing the road with asphalt will cost around $23 million compared to more than $27 million to use concrete.
The project now moves to the detailed design phase.
Besides the cost, Jewell Engineering also suggested asphalt was the better option because it would be easier to maintain.
County staff soon hope to have a tender-ready project so they can apply for federal and provincial funding.
County Road 49 has been at or near the top of many worst roads lists over the last several years.
