Belleville Council approved about $14,000 worth of community grants at its meeting on Monday afternoon.
Among the grants approved were $600 for the Humane Society of Hastings Prince Edward’s annual Wiggle Waggle Walk-a-thon, along with free use of the Quinte Exhibition Raceway property and washrooms there, plus use of some city-owned tables and portable bleachers.
Council also approved just over $8,400 for Volunteer and Information Quinte’s annual Dancing With The Stars fundraiser.
Councillors also discussed and approved a $5,000 grant to Gift From the Heart, which provides free dental care to those who can’t afford it, after that request hadn’t made it to the floor during the April 2021 Grant Committee meeting.
Multiple councillors made a point to support the request based on the positive health impacts on the community.
Little Bird’s Daycare had also asked the city for any financial help available to get the business started, but that request was denied because it didn’t meet the criteria for a community grant. Those owners were directed to the Trenval Business Development Corporation for further financial assistance.
