The plans for a faith-based women’s recovery home at 543 Thrasher Road took a step forward at Monday’s Belleville Planning Advisory Committee meeting.
The plans for the site on Thrasher Road would see the property converted into a year-round faith-based recovery home for women struggling with addiction, mental health or other issues.
It would be run by the New Life Women’s Home and would offer things like life skills classes, education services and community services.
The land currently has a single detached dwelling, a log cabin and a lean-to cover. The rest of the property is forestry.
If approved, the development would include two standalone dormitory style bunk houses, an activity building with studios, activity rooms, a workroom and additional bunking, a workshop, a chapel and a barn.
The total resident capacity is set for 22 people.
After a public meeting in January the plans reduced the capacity from 40 to 22 in response to concerns over water and sewage infrastructure.
The plans have received six letters in support and five letters in opposition.
The main points raised by the people who are against the plans are related to water and sewage infrastructure as well as safety of the area over concerns of having a property housing people suffering from mental health and addiction issues.
The staff recommendation suggested the committee make a recommendation to Belleville city council to approve the plans for the recovery home.
The committee voted on and approved the staff recommendation meaning the matter will be brought to Belleville council for final approval.
