This Sunday marks the 77th anniversary of D-Day, the day the Allies landed on the shores of France during World War II.
But it won’t be marked this year locally.
Usually this major mark in the momentum of the war is honoured by communities.
It put the Allies on land in France after troops withdrew at Dunkirk two years earlier.
Stephen Shirk is the immediate Past President of the local Veterans Council.
Shirk says ceremonies to mark such important days, including VE Day and Vimy Ridge Day, are usually planned well ahead, but the Ontario COVID-19 shutdown has changed all that.
“We’re hoping everything is going to be good for us to celebrate Remembrance Day even if we have to modify it like we did last year.”
Shirk says these ceremonies are for veterans.
” … and also for our current serving members in the military and cadet corps, the reservists out there.”
He added, “It’s good for them to know that there’s an organization here that’s looking out for their interests as well. So this year we’ve put it on hold to be any kind of celebration. We’re hoping everything is going to be good for us to celebrate Remembrance Day, even if we have to modify it like we did last year.”
