The Canadian Armed Forces has appointed a new Chaplain General, with Major-General Guy Chapdelaine set to retire after 43 years of military service.
Brigadier-General Guy Belisle took over the role during a virtual ceremony on Monday which was presided over by acting Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre.
Brig.-Gen. Belisle joined the military in 1986 as an infantry officer with the 22nd Regiment in Quebec City, with time spent overseas as well, before earning a master’s degree in theology from St. Paul University in Ottawa from 1998 to 2004.
He has also been posted to various other bases and missions, including at CFB Valcartier, as well as the earthquake relief mission in Haiti and the last combat mission in Afghanistan.
The CAF says the Chaplain General “assumes the responsibility for supporting the religious and spiritual needs” of armed forces members and their families.
