The five Police Service Boards in Northumberland County could soon be reduced to one.
The five townships and their respective Police Service Boards have developed a plan for a single OPP Police Service Board for the Northumberland detachment.
The new board would consist of 10 members, including one from each municipality, two appointed by the province, two community members and, for the first time, would also include First Nation representation.
Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander says an amalgamated Police Service Board makes a lot of sense from a governance perspective.
The new structure is expected to be more efficient while still meeting the local needs of the Northumberland communities.
The proposal has been submitted to the province’s Solicitor General for approval.
