The Belleville Police Service is supporting an effort by a Member of Provincial Parliament to bring in legislation combating the common and costly “gas and dash” problem.
MPP Deepak Anand is pushing Bill 231 for passage at Queen’s Park. The legislation would make it mandatory for people to pay upfront before any gasoline is sold.
Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan was wholeheartedly in support of the bill as similar legislation in Canada and the U.S. had almost completely eliminated “gas and dash” incidents, adding that police officers spend quite a bit of time investigating such crimes.
