The Belleville Police Service, in partnership with other police departments, is making headway against illegal drugs and their dealers.
The Belleville police six-person Project Renewal team arrested 28 people in the first three months of this year in 14 separate investigations.
Police Chief Mike Callaghan told the Belleville Police Services Board on Thursday that while the drug problem also involves social service supports, police enforcement is crucial.
“We’re incredibly proud of the work that the drug, intelligence, and street crime units have done to really take a positive stance that if you bring drugs into the city we are going to work on insuring that you don’t.”
Project Renewal officers laid 79 charges in the first quarter and seized over $62,000 worth of illegal drugs and almost $342,000 in cash.
Also seized were three tasers, ammunition, knives, safes, cell phones, a stolen ATV, and a baton.
