Renovations to council chambers at Shire Hall won’t be going ahead any time soon.
On Thursday, Prince Edward County Council, sitting as Committee of the Whole, received a report on a plan to expand council chambers, upgrade technology and improve accessibility.
Many councillors felt the plan was premature with some, like Councillor Ernie Margetson questioning whether Shire Hall is even the best choice for council to continue meeting in.
“While it might be warranted to improve some space and accessibility features on that floor, I think it’s premature at this point to go through this exercise to expand that chamber when ultimately we may not want to stay there and it may not be the best solution in the long term.”
Another issue at play is a grant that the municipality has qualified for that would cover part of the $428,000 construction cost.
If it’s not used by the end of the year, the County will lose it.
Council has directed staff to reinvestigate the grant to determine if the funds could be expended on other modernization issues the County is facing.
