A new core volunteer group is working to revitalize Birdhouse City in the Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area.
In a deputation to Prince Edward County Committee of the Whole last week, Gillian Carson told council they weren’t asking for money to fix up the 40-year-old attraction, but a proclamation of “the value of Birdhouse City and its significance as a unique social, cultural, heritage and recreational site in Prince Edward County.”
The new volunteer group was established last summer.
Over the years, repairs and maintenance to Birdhouse City have only occurred once the birdhouses were well into disrepair.
The new group of volunteers is taking a proactive management approach with annual maintenance and restorations or replacements on a cyclical basis.
The group will move from a reactive to proactive management approach.
More than 50 Birdhouse City builders have identified their interest to help, through Quinte Conservation’s Adopt a Birdhouse program.
Over this past winter 39 of the birdhouses have been restored or rebuilt.
The proclamation would assist both Birdhouse City and the County in recognizing the value of Birdhouse City’s contribution to the recreation, culture, and heritage needs of County residents.
Mayor Steve Ferguson will work with the volunteer group to create the requested proclamation.
Donations can be made to Birdhouse City at quinteconservation.ca.
