Tweed council is being asked to get into the hockey business at Wednesday’s council meeting.
Mitch Gagne will make a deputation to council to have the municipality join the 11 team Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League. It’s a senior hockey league that includes teams in Deseronto, Smiths Falls, Gananoque and South Grenville.
Gagne estimates it would cost about $25,000 a year to operate.
In a report to council the Parks and Recreation Department says it would be Tweed’s responsibility to recruit players, secure referees, sponsorships and selling tickets. It adds there is no cost for the players and coaches as they will volunteer their time.
The report recommends council consider joining the league adding that the EOSHL would bring the community together and give user groups such as minor hockey and figure skating the opportunity to volunteer and fundraise.
The Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League plays a 24 game schedule. It is open to players 20 years of age and older.
