While the COVID-19 vaccination rollout chugs along in Hastings Prince Edward, HPE’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza is urging people not to delay booking if they’re eligible.
“Well I think what’s most important is that first of all that people who are eligible do not delay their immunization, and get that appointment booked as early as possible and go to that appointment as early as possible.”
Oglaza said that while local COVID-19 numbers have been low, it’s still important to get as many people vaccinated as possible. On Monday the vaccination booking was opened up to people born in 1946 or earlier.
As far as the vaccine supply to the area, Oglaza said that they were getting exactly 3,510 doses per week with the exception of one week in March, when they got 2,400 doses.
But he says, that for the next two weeks, it will be bumped up to 5,850 doses per week.
Oglaza stressed that anyone who may have trouble booking online, on the phone, or who may have mobility issues, should ask family and friends for help. He also said that something is in the works for people who have issues getting to the clinics.
“There is going to be a separate strategy working with the community partners on how we reach out to those who have mobility issues and how we assist them in either getting to clinics or getting immunizations at home.”
For now, Oglaza said, people who are eligible should be booking their vaccination as soon as possible and that despite the low occurrence rate in the area, people need to remain vigilant with public health guidelines.
