The City of Belleville is considering taking part in an environmental initiative that’s become quite popular in some other parts of the province, as the idea of a “Giveaway Day” was brought forward at council’s meeting on Monday.
The “Giveaway Day” is meant to normalize the reuse and donation of unwanted but usable items and keep them from ending up in landfills, while promoting the “sharing economy”.
Councillor Chris Malette sits on the city’s Green Task Force and says with many people doing some pandemic-related, or spring reorganizing, this may be a good way to get rid of some of stuff you can’t find a home for.
“I know from experience that if you simply leave something by the curb long enough, at least in my neighbourhood, away she goes. It’s one day a year when you can take that old desk, or old rocker and put it by the road for one day. It’s not going to be left out there indefinitely.”
Any items that don’t get claimed that day will have to be brought back in.
A date for the Giveaway Day hasn’t been set, but staff say if it’s successful, they’ll look at making it an annual event.
