There was discussion on the feasibility of a ward system for local elections in the Municipality of Brighton at Brighton council’s meeting Monday night.
Some people had expressed interest in creating a ward system in Brighton in the last election and the idea was up for review as part of the municipality’s strategic plan.
Council will discuss the matter again but Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander believes council will support the current system whereby members of council are voted on by all residents.
“It gives everybody the opportunity to represent ALL the people of Brighton, not just through a ward system, and there’s some concern that a ward system will create more division than we really need.”
Brighton council will likely decide the matter at Monday’s planning meeting.
