The Ontario Government is trying to address a need for more personal support workers by investing $115 million in training at colleges across the province, including Loyalist.
The Accelerated PSW Program is being implemented at all 24 of Ontario’s public colleges, with a plan to train and hire up to 8,200 new PSWs, province-wide, with 120 of those being trained at Loyalist College.
The program provides a tuition-free opportunity for 6,000 new students and is expected to take just six months to complete, including three months of course work and clinic work, followed by three months of paid onsite training in a long term care or community care environment.
The province says another 2,200 students, who are close to finishing an existing PSW program, are eligible for a tuition grant of up to $2,000.
The new program is expected to start in April of this year.
