The Hastings County Historical Society is pleased to announce an exciting new program that will interest all of those residents that have longed to tell a story of “the old days”. The Society is inviting the residents of Hastings County to reflect on their life experiences (or perhaps those of friends and family) and events in the past and to gather these memories into short stories. This is a wonderful opportunity to capture the memories and stories of life as it was decades ago and to share these memories with future generations. This program is part of the Society’s ongoing efforts to gather and preserve local history and what better way to do it than to invite recollections directly from those who have, as the saying goes, been there and done that!
Society Director Jim Kennelly explained that the Historical Society has been affected like all other organizations throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic, but it has not been idle, While activities such as our Public Presentations, Historic Bus Tour and Annual Banquet have been cancelled for the year, the Society has been very busy with new programs, one of those being this project to gather the colourful stories of life as it was some years ago.
Jim Kennelly commented that we are living in such a fast changing world and many of the younger people today have no idea what life was like even back in, say, the 1950’s. It is so important to have the older generations share their knowledge of our history before this treasure chest of information is lost forever.
Specifically, the Society is encouraging interested residents of Hastings County to reflect on their experiences of the past and to submit these stories, with a suggested length of 250 to 400 words more or less, to the Society. These can be sent in either by mail or to their email address at the addresses noted below. This project will continue all through 2021. The stories will be kept for the benefit of future generations in the Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County and a selection of them will of them will be published in the Society’s newsletter, Outlook, for our members and friends across the region to enjoy.
