Belleville Council will be asked to finalize a by-law increasing development charges in the city on Monday.
Council could rubber stamp the plan, which would see charges paid by developers go up 10% for a year, before staff reevaluate the fee schedule.
Money brought in through development charges helps pay for the cost of new water, sewer and other infrastructure, including fire hydrants and more.
Some local builders aren’t pleased with the move, as it could cause the charges for a new urban house to go up from $13,000 to more than $27,000.
At the time of the original discussion, Councillor Bill Sandison noted that the increase might become a burden for those trying to buy a home in the area and backed staff’s plan to study development charges again within the first half of this year.
