Prince Edward County’s Municipal Accommodation Tax or MAT takes effect February 1.
The County has issued a reminder that as of that date, any bookings made at motels, hotels, inns, bed and breakfast establishments, and private, short-term accommodations will be charged the four per cent tax.
Those renting out accommodations must collect the MAT and remit any charges to the County quarterly.
It has been estimated that the new MAT will bring in roughly $850,000 in new revenue annually.
Under provincial legislation, half the revenue generated by the tax will be used by the municipality for infrastructure or services that support tourism while the other half of the tax revenue must be used to support tourism marketing and development.
