Prince Edward County has no objection to the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte repatriating Forester’s Island.
At Thursday’s Committee of the Whole, council carried a motion directing staff to write a letter to the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte confirming that it has no objections to the band engaging in the Addition to Reserve process with the federal government.
The 19.5 hectare island was originally gifted to the Mohawks in the 1800s but now is treated as part of Sophiasburgh ward for tax collection purposes.
The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte contend the island has always been in their jurisdiction as part of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
A portion of the island was ceremonially transferred back to the Mohawks in 2005.
