One of the busiest firefighter training centres in Ontario is very likely going to get even busier in the coming months.
On Wednesday, the provincial government announced it will close its multi-million dollar fire training operation in Gravenhurst and expand its 20 regional centres.
One of those training centres is in Trenton.
Deputy Fire Chief for Quinte West Rick Caddick welcomes more emphasis on regional centres and hopes the province will provide more support to improve the facilities.
The local fire training centre is owned and operated by the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association and currently provides courses for firefighters from every department in the two counties and accepts students from all over the province.
It is currently running courses authorized by the Office of the Fire Marshal and students from two programs at Loyalist College.
Caddick says the Hastings Prince Edward training centre was among the first of its kind and there’s room for expansion at its Chester Road location if demand warrants.
