Prince Edward County council is getting ready for new development in Wellington that could quadruple the population there in the future.
In recent past, the county has been presented with proposals to add as many as 2,500 residential units over the next several years eventually bringing the population of the village to over 8,000 from a little over 2,000 people.
In order to accommodate the developments, major upgrades to both the water and wastewater systems will have to be done.
A consultant’s study shows the cost of the upgrades, which would be done in phases, would total over $100 million.
On January 14, county council will hold a public meeting into a proposed Area Specific Development Charges bylaw for Wellington only.
The charges would help pay the extra costs to the municipality caused by the new developments and would be initially paid by developers.
In turn, the developers include the charges in the price of the residential unit being sold.
The consultant’s estimate the development charges on a single family home would total over $21,000.
County council’s goal is to have the bylaw in place by the end of February.
