Belleville Councillor Sean Kelly has defended his vote not to have Tyler Allsopp fill the council seat of the late Pat Culhane.
Councillor Kelly visited CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show on Friday to talk about the issue which has caused significant backlash around the city.
Kelly says his decision was well-researched and based solely on the need for more diversity in the city’s representation.
“And I know what Councillor Culhane resonated with me, she practised diversity and did I get too connected to it all? But I believe in it, Lorne and this was not an easy decision. I did my due diligence, I did my research, I went with my gut and my heart, and change doesn’t just happen without somebody taking the leadership role.”
He says he’s heard a fair amount of feedback, which hasn’t all been negative and he’ll continue to listen to what citizens have to say on the issue.
When asked numerous times about whether or not he regrets his decision, or would change his mind, Kelly says “he’s reflected on it” but still believes that there needs to be more of a conversation on making sure the people on council represent the changing demographics of the city.
“Certainly at this point I’m staying strong, I’m continuing the conversation with many in the community and I want to see two women at the table. I think it’s important. I did my research because I believe it’s time for change. You said ‘let’s do it in two or three years’, but I want it done now.”
Assuming the ad hoc committee to select a new candidate stands, Kelly says he hopes citizens won’t “throw those committee members under the bus” because they are “stepping up to make a difference in the community”.
