A new housing development is planned off Maitland Drive in urban Belleville’s north end.
A numbered company is applying to the city for approval of an Official Plan Amendment, zoning changes, and a draft plan of subdivision.
If approved, the development located on the south side of Maitland Drive just west of Highway 62 would feature 36 houses and 61 townhouses of various types.
It would be known as “Maitland Commons.”
The land is currently zoned commercial in the Official Plan.
At Monday night’s meeting of the city’s Planning Committee, consultant Ruth Ferguson Aulthouse said that noise barriers would be part of the project.
“Somewhat unique is the fact there’ll also be acoustic barriers the developer will install upon the roof of Lowes to screen and mitigate the impacts from the HVAC unit.”
Ferguson Aulthouse also commented that the city has a great deal of commercial land and needs residential projects.
“There’s an opportunity here with certain portions of the commercial land base to consider it in certain locations for alternate uses, such as residential.”
Area resident Kevin Pond told the committee he objected to loss of green space in the area and called for only single homes on the area facing Gavey Street.
Councillor Sean Kelly declared a conflict of interest and left the meeting during this agenda item..
Staff will bring a report back to the committee.
