The Special Investigations Unit has closed their investigation into a collision in Trenton.
Director of the SIU, Joseph Martino says he has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe the Quinte West OPP officer involved committed a criminal offence in relation to a collision which occurred on May 22, 2020 and led to injuries.
A 24 year-old man was seriously injured when his vehicle lost control, careened into a ditch and rolled several times before coming to rest.
Police had been in pursuit of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
According to the Director’s report, an officer was attempting to stop a vehicle for speeding in the area of Wooler Road around 7:30 p.m.
At one point in the report, it is noted the cruiser was being driven at 166 km/h on Stockdale Road north.
Minutes later, the officer ended the pursuit but continued to follow in the direction of the fleeing car.
The officer involved then reported the suspect car had been involved in a rollover collision and both occupants were trapped in the car.
The driver tried to flee the scene but both he and a passenger were arrested at the scene.
Both were taken the hospital and the driver was diagnosed with a fractured shoulder.
Martino says based on his assessment of the evidence, there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the collision and the Complainant’s injury.
