Belleville residents and developers will get a chance to comment on the city’s proposed new development charges, at a meeting in early December.
Development charges are fees levied on new development to fund the cost of increased municipal services and infrastructure such as sidewalks, sewers, roads, and water mains, resulting from new development.
Director of Engineering and Development Services Stephen Ashton tells Quinte News an example is the proposed pumping station to service the whole Loyalist Secondary Plan area.
Ashton adds that the province requires the development charges be reviewed every five years.
The city statement indicates the new proposed charges are based on a Background Study prepared in accordance with the Development Charges Act.
The 2020 Development Charges Background Study has been prepared pursuant to the requirements of the Development Charges Act 1997 and recommends new development charges and policies for the City of Belleville.
The public meeting will be part of the regular city council meeting December 14.
The proposed new increased charges are in a consultant’s study posted on the city website.
