Belleville city council will again discuss allowing a ride sharing business to operate in the city at its meeting Monday.
Council will see a report from staff on ride sharing services and the city’s current Taxi Licensing By-Law.
Staff maintains the current taxi by-law cannot be used to regulate a ride sharing service.
Council will see a recommendation that enforcement of the current by-law be paused while a study is done leading to new regulations that apply to both taxi companies and ride sharing services.
Staff believes such a move would allow a ride sharing service such as Uride to open in the city soon.
It’s widely believed that people are waiting far too long for a taxi under the current system.
Uride recently made a presentation to city council on its service and wants to operate in Belleville. It describes itself as Canada’s fastest growing
ride sharing service.
Its service involves licensed, trained drivers, and passengers simply use an app on their smartphones to reach the company.
The company says it can offer fast service at more affordable rates.
Some on council expressed enthusiasm for such a service after the company’s presentation.
More detail on Uride can be found here.
