It is that time of year again.
Winter weather will soon be upon us and in some parts of the province it has already arrived.
The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) encourage motorists to drive with extra care and to ensure their vehicles are fully prepared to meet the challenges winter driving brings.
Every year the first snowfall brings with it the excitement of winter activities. Unfortunately the winter weather also brings a significant increase in motor vehicle collisions.
Getting Your Vehicle Ready:
- Install four winter tires. Winter tires provide your vehicle with more traction and handle freezing temperatures better than all-seasons
- Have an ice-scraper or snow brush in your vehicle at all times
- Keep your windshield washer fluid topped up and keep an extra container in your vehicle
- Keep your fuel tank at least half full in case you get stranded and to prevent condensation in the tank
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Items should include: a charged phone and charger, water, non -perishable food, flashlight, blanket, warm clothes, jumper cables, shovel, candles and a lighter or matches.
- Remember to take warm winter boots and jackets with you in your vehicle when travelling.
Adjust your Driving Habits:
EXERCISE PATIENCE! SLOW DOWN! BE ALERT! STAY IN CONTROL!
- Keep full set of headlights on every day throughout the winter months
- Leave extra space between vehicles
- Know your location and plan
- Before heading out, monitor road and weather conditions from the location you are leaving from, and the destination you will be travelling to.
- Give yourself plenty of time.
- Never pass a snow plow! Remain a safe distance back from maintenance equipment when you see blue flashing lights.
During inclement weather if you do not need to travel, stay at home.
If you must travel, adjust your driving habits accordingly.
Remember to slow down and be patient, as you will most likely experience delays during the commute.
