The president of the Quinte Home Builders Association is calling proposed changes to development charges in Belleville “reckless”.
John Van Huizen spoke to Quinte News regarding the draft study for the municipality.
He says if the by-laws are approved, it could increase charges on a single-family dwelling from $12,000 to as much as $28,000.
“What this development charge is suggesting is increasing that on a single family dwelling by 123 percent.”
That cost would not be eaten by developers, it would be passed on to the owner, and Van Huizen says in today’s economic climate, that is concerning.
Development charges help municipalities cover the cost of new construction, and assist with the expansion costs of infrastructure and services.
Van Huizen says Belleville prices are already high for the area. He is urging council to not pass the study, and that the home builders can have some input.
