Belleville is making headlines as one of the top places that job seekers from the big city are seeking out.
According to a story in the Toronto Sun, which cites stats from job seeking website Monster.com, Belleville was the number one place that job seekers looked for work in, between July 1 and the end of August.
Belleville Economic and Destination Development Committee Chair Ryan Williams says the news isn’t all that surprising given the circumstances.
“People have found what we’ve known for years, that this is a little slice of heaven and are starting to look this way. They want to get out of big city centres during COVID and this area is very attractive. It’s nice to see, in the struggle that we’ve seen over the years in getting people of working age to move to the area and not just retirees, that we are number one on a list in searches for jobs.”
He added that the news is good, not only for employers here looking for more workers, but it also gives flexibility to some people who want to move here, but keep their jobs in a bigger centre.
“I think what we’ve seen is it’s attracting people who are willing to work remotely from their homes. If they work for a company in Toronto or another big city, they can actually do that work from here, which is great news.”
The top three communities job seekers were looking at between July 1 and the end of August were Belleville, Oshawa, and London.
