Remembrance Day was marked with smaller ceremonies across the region and the country today, with pandemic-related gathering limits in effect, but that didn’t stop community members from reflecting on the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers.
At a small ceremony at the Belleville cenotaph, ANAF Padre-Major Wil Brown-Ratcliffe quoted the film “Saving Private Ryan” in saying that we should not only celebrate our freedom, but continue to “earn it”, in honour of those that were lost.
“Earn it. The poignant call to each of us who are recipients of all the blessings that are ours in this great land. The freedom from tyranny, the material and natural wealth, a peaceful society, and the rule of law. All of this challenges us individually and collectively to honour the sacrifice of our forebearers by bringing the tribute of a ready heart, an obedient life and a worthy citizenship to our country, so that through our life and the councils of government, the idea of a sacrificially-won liberty and peace can prevail.”
Belleville Veteran’s Council Chair Stephen Shirk thanked all of those who have served and continue to serve, while also taking a moment to remember one local military member, killed in a tragic accident in the spring.
“I’d like to pay special attention to one of our fallen, Captain Jenn Casey with the Snowbirds. Her loss is also our loss today. And to our Wing, thank you so much.”
He also issued a thank you to citizens for doing their part to still pay tribute while following public health guidelines.
Meanwhile, a fly-by along the Highway of Heroes by three CC-130J Hercules Aircraft from 436 Squadron at CFB Trenton was cancelled this morning, due to inclement weather.
