Hiring the disabled can be good for business and very good for the community.
It’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the Ontario Disability Employment Network is working to spread the word of the benefits of hiring the disabled.
Executive Director of META Employment Centres in the Quinte region Sandra Leslie says local employers have been great hiring the disabled and that META itself offers employers lots of help to accommodate new hires with various government programs.
“There’s a lot of supports that we’re able to put in place to accommodate anyone with a disability so if employers require some special technology or some physical support we can certainly help cover the cost of those and make sure they’re placed properly and work with people in the workplace to make sure the accommodation is correct”.
In Belleville alone, META has facilitated the hiring of over 200 disabled persons in the past year.
In honour of National Disability Employment Awareness Month the Bridge Street Bridge in Belleville’s Downtown District will be lit in purple and blue tomorrow (Thursday) and people are encouraged wear purple and blue.
