The Snowbirds were getting set to launch their 50th anniversary early in 2020, however it has been a year to forget for the aerobatic team. Not only did they have to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, they lost one of their own. Captain Jennifer Casey (Public Affairs Officer) died in May, as the plane she was in crashed in British Columbia. The team was flying across the country to bring joy to Canadians during the COVID pandemic.
Casey spent several years living in Trenton (2012-18), and worked here at Quinte Broadcasting (CJBQ, Mix 97, Rock 107, and Quinte News), before moving into the military. She was stationed at CFB Trenton, before moving on to work for the F18 Demo team, and then the Snowbirds.
The planes remained in BC for the length of the investigation, however they have now been moved back to their home base in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They have now begun flying in training. The goal is to celebrate their 50th anniversary of flying.
Over the weekend the Snowbirds released a photo in one of their hangars. It showed two of the planes, and many of the items of remembrance hung around the Kamloops Airport.
