The federal government is investing more to help Indigenous communities develop culturally appropriate agricultural policies across the country.
Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Bay of Quinte riding MP Neil Ellis announced just over $2 million in funding for Indigenous agricultural initiatives Friday.
Ellis says his government is committed to advancing Indigenous culture and fostering respectful and ongoing partnerships.
“In fact it was only through the teaching and generosity of Indigenous people that the first waves of European settlers were able to survive and cultivate this land. This is an often forgotten part of the agricultural history of our country.”
Just over $1 million will go to the Native Women’s Association of Canada to run pilot tests growing Indigenous plants and another close to $1 million is being granted to the Indian Agricultural Program of Ontario to add and expand its programs.
