The Covid 19 pandemic has been tough on every organization and business including the YMCA.
Last night Quinte West’s Corporate Finance Committee was asked for financial support to pay some utility costs for the ‘Y’ in Trenton.
The gym was closed due to the pandemic on March 16 and only opened September 1. Almost all of the staff had to be laid off and hundreds of thousands of dollars in membership fees were lost.
However the YMCA had to keep the pool running and maintained as well as doing other work.
Councillor Lesley Roseblade said the ‘Y’ couldn’t just walk away from the building and should be helped financially.
“That could’ve cost significant impact to the machinery involved. They didn’t stop cleaning or working on that building the whole time. I would say that they did do their best Mr. Mayor to keep that building in tip top shape which is a definite benefit to the city because we own the building.”
The committee unanimously supported up to $95,000 for the Trenton YMCA to pay its bills.
Council will have to give final approval to the decision.
