Brighton council has made an addition to its Public Nuisance by-law to include regulations aimed at protecting residents from unwanted smells and bright lighting from cannabis growing operations.
Mayor of Brighton Brian Ostrander says there have been a number of complaints about odours from the plants and no one knows exactly how many growers might be involved.
“Probably more than we even know about but certainly we are aware of some and we know that law enforcement is investigating a great many of them.”
Most of the complaints involve people who have been licensed to grow medical marijuana banding together to grow a large number of plants in one location.
Under the new Public Nuisance By-law, growers could face fines of thousands of dollars.
