Trent Port Marina in Quinte West is one of 23 marinas around the Great Lakes that is taking part in a new project to clean up the waterways.
Marina Assistant General Manager Andrew Belaj says they have installed two new items, one called a Seabin, and the other called a LittaTrap.
Belaj explains the Seabin.
“A Seabin is a European product that sits in the water with a pump that pushes current up and down and brings plastics, weeds, and other things that prohibit water quality.”
He also explains the LittaTrap.
“No electrical component to that, but anything from the water runoff, whether it’s cigarette butts, plastics that goes down into the storm drains, this catches it before it can get exposed into our water systems.”
Belaj says the Seabin is in an area of the marina where a lot of debris is pushed by the wind.
The materials collected are then taken to an assessment area to find out exactly what is in our waterway.
