Churches in Trenton have picked up a couple of food programs to replace those lost when the Salvation Army closed its programs in July.
Prior to COVID-19 the Salvation Army would serve a hot lunch to 30 – 60 people every Monday through Thursday.
With the onset of Covid they began preparing bag lunches for their clients to pick up and eat off-site.
Crossroads Church and St. James Anglican Church are joining to continue this service.
Crossroads Pastor Trevor Blais tells Quinte News the takeaway lunches are working in the same way.
He has concerns about what will happen as the year progresses.
“We’re serving 22 people every single day, noon to one, people cannot get food. I think it will increase as the CERB money runs out.”
Volunteers prepare the bag lunches which are available Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Mondays and Tuesdays are hosted by At The Crossroads Church. Wednesdays and Thursdays are hosted by St. James Anglican Church.
Crossroads would like to partner with individuals and businesses in the community to be able to replace the Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle fundraising program.
Crossroads issued this statement:
The Christmas hamper program is a major undertaking. Last year 375 families received a hamper. The Kinsmen club distributed toys to 300 children, and the same number received clothing through the Adopt-A-Child program. Both the toy and adopt-a-child programs are co-ordinated by At the Crossroads Church.
We anticipate the need will be even greater this year given the hardships related to the Covid 19 pandemic.
The Salvation Army ran their Christmas kettle campaign to help support these worthy programs. At the Crossroads church does not run such a program. We rely on donations from the community to support the overwhelming needs of these individuals and children in our community..Therefore, we would like to partner with individuals and businesses in our community. To make a credit card donation, please contact At the Crossroads Church at 613-392-8200 or visit our website www.atthecrossroads.ca All monies received go directly to these worthy programs.
