There are Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci or VRE outbreaks at Belleville General Hospital.
Several patients on medicine units known as Quinte 4 and Quinte 5 recently tested positive for VRE colonization.
Enterococci bacteria are common in most people’s intestinal tracts and don’t cause problems but some become resistant to an antibiotic and can cause illness, especially in people who are already unwell.
The affected units at BGH are isolating patients infected, cleaning has been increased and staff are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
