Condolences are starting to stream in for the first mayor of the amalgamated Prince Edward County.
James (Jim) Taylor died on Tuesday after a fall last week at his home.
Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith says Taylor had a long political career.
“Served as a cabinet minister with Conservative governments back in the 70s and 80s with Bill Davis. Served as the Minister of Energy for some time and then served in the portfolio that I currently represent now; Minister of Community and Social Services. Known as a real leader in the community for decades.”
Smith says Taylor was a real driving force behind the creation of Prince Edward County as we know it now.
Taylor served as mayor from 1997 to 2003.
Current Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson says it was under Mr. Taylor that the foundation was laid for the municipality that exists and thrives today.
Ferguson added he had the privilege of meeting and talking to Mr. Taylor on several occasions after he was elected to council in 2014 and says he was a kind man and generous with his time, sharing stories of his life in provincial politics and the early days of The County.
He leaves behind a wife and daughter.
Funeral details will be released at a later date.
Flags at Shire Hall will be flown at half mast.
