The Hastings County Greater Napanee Joint Recruitment Program has a new doctor.
The announcement was made at Thursday’s virtual meeting of Hastings County Council.
Dr. Niteesshan Singaram will begin practising in the area later this year.
Dr. Singaram is in residency at Queen’s University in Kingston at the moment.
He has studied in Ireland and worked six months previously in Napanee.
In his introductory video he says he appreciated the “comradeship of doctors in the area.”
Dr. Singaram intends to use the money he receives from the recruitment program to establish a clinic in Deseronto.
He is part of the program that Hastings County developed in 2006.
It takes the long-term approach of recruitment by supporting medical students and residents of Canadian Medical Schools.
It pays out $100,000 over five years to the students in exchange for providing five years of service practicing family medicine in the area.
Sixteen doctors are currently practising in the county with two more expected to begin over the next year.
