A Liberal MP in the Greater Toronto Area is calling on the new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, to oust Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Derek Sloan from the caucus.
In a letter put out on Tuesday, Oakville-North Burlington Liberal MP Pam Damoff is demanding that Erin O’Toole remove Sloan from the party and refuse to sign his nomination papers as a Conservative candidate in the next election.
Damoff says she is proud to be part of a Liberal Caucus that “believes in protecting LGBTQ2 rights and women’s rights and sees Canada’s diversity as our greatest strength” and that refusing to remove Sloan from the Conservative Party would show that O’Toole condones some of the controversial positions and messages that Sloan had put forward during the recent CPC leadership race.
She says that would make it difficult for Canadians to understand O’Toole’s vision for the future of the country and that for them to see that he was not just “pandering to the far-right in order to win the leadership”.
It’s not the first time there have been calls to have Sloan booted from the party.
Sloan had released a video in April, questioning the loyalty of Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam, with some in the party and other levels of government calling his comments racist and inappropriate.
At that time, former leader Andrew Scheer had said Sloan shouldn’t have made those comments, but wouldn’t comment or take further action, since Sloan was running to replace him atop the CPC.
Sloan has maintained that his comments were valid and calls that they were racist were blown out of proportion by the national media.
