Motorists are just going to have to deal with narrow streets and parking on both sides of the road in Wellington this summer.
Councillors didn’t vote in favour of a number of one-way street designations during their Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday afternoon.
A staff report was brought forward to address traffic pressures along Main Street and into Wellington Beach in Wellington.
The report recommended the speed limit on Beach Street to be reduced to 20km/h, West Street to be designated as a southbound one-way street with parking on the west side, and Water Street for westbound traffic and Narrow Street for northbound traffic to be designated as one-way streets with no parking.
Councillor Mike Harper said he thinks the changes would do a lot to alleviate some congestion and parking issues in downtown Wellington.
Councillor Brad Nieman felt the report didn’t follow the proper process by going to the traffic committee first before coming to council.
Councillors did approve the speed reduction on Beach Street but not before a number of those around the horseshoe noted they are becoming “Wellington weary” because of the frequency of stressful issues from the village being brought to their attention in the recent months.
