The Wellington Wastewater Treatment Plant is going to undergo some required work.
Council approved a motion on Thursday afternoon during their Committee of the Whole meeting at Highline Hall in Wellington for the purchase of a tertiary ozone disinfection treatment system at a cost of $1.3 million.
The work is being done so the plant can meet regulations for non-toxic effluent as regulations come into effect at the beginning of next year under Federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations.
Director of Water/Wastewater Don Caza said in hydro costs alone, after switching to the ozone disinfecting system, they are predicting the municipality can save $25,000.
The treatment plant currently uses chlorination as a means to disinfect the wastewater effluent leaving the plant and upgrades and a change in treatment process are required to be able to meet the non-toxic limits.
Councillors also approved a motion to have staff proceed with the construction of a building or prefabricated structure to hold the disinfection system.
The municipality would be working with Aclarus Ozone to single source the treatment system.
Prince Edward County budgeted $3.1 million for this project.
